When Ford muscled up its Mustang for the model’s first update in 1967, Carroll Shelby was ready. To trim weight from the stock Mustang, Shelby specified fiberglass body panels up front, including a revised scooped and louvered hood with square driving lamps integrated into the grille.

In 1968, Shelby finally bowed to customer demand and introduced an open-topped variety of his infamous Mustangs. With the top lowered to reveal its signature integrated roll bar, these new Shelby convertibles left no doubt as to their performance pedigree.

The Shelby GT 350 convertible on offer here is documented by both the Shelby American Automobile Club registry and Marti Auto Works as one of just 183 1968 Shelby Convertibles to wear the coveted Highland Green finish over a Black Vinyl Deluxe Bucket Seat trim package. The car was further equipped with a white power top with glass backlight, extra cooling package, power steering and disc brakes, visibility group, tilt-away steering wheel, interior décor group, and a heavy-duty battery. Upon its completion in January 1968, the car was shipped to Maryland for sale via Schmidt Ford Sales, Inc. of Baltimore.

Convertible Shelby Mustangs continue to capture the attention they received upon their introduction, and rightfully so, for they offer their fortunate owners the chance to experience what is among the classic car hobby’s greatest thrills: wind in your hair driving behind the wheel of an American V-8.
