RM Sotheby’s and Formula 1 are partnering to bring the first major collector car auction to the Middle East, and now we are excited to announce early auction highlights. Taking place 30 November at the FORMULA 1 ETIHAD AIRWAYS ABU DHABI GRAND PRIX 2019, this inaugural auction has found a headliner in the historic, Championship-winning 2002 Ferrari F2002 driven by F1 racing legend Michael Schumacher.
The 2002 Formula 1 season saw Michael Schumacher finish 1st or 2nd in every race, and chassis 219 played a pivotal role, being piloted to victory at three Grand Prix events that season: Imola, Zeltweg, and Magny-Cours. Victory at Magny-Cours would secure Schumacher his fifth World Drivers’ Championship title; with six races remaining in the season, it remains the shortest time in which a World Drivers’ title has ever been clinched. The F2002 saw additional podium finishes in the season, helping Ferrari secure the Constructor’s Championship that year.
Retiring from the track after the 2002 season, chassis 219 has since been held in significant private collections across multiple continents. Considered one of the most significant Formula 1 cars and a representation of Ferrari and Schumacher’s golden era as reigning champions, its offering in Abu Dhabi is one of the most important opportunities of the year for enthusiasts and motorsport fans alike. A percentage of proceeds from the sale of the F2002 will be donated to Michael Schumacher’s Keep Fighting Foundation, which seeks to inspire the world to never give up.
