Immortalized in Steve McQueen’s Bullitt, the Dodge Charger remains one of the most iconic American automobiles. With its aggressive full-width grille, hidden headlights, and signature flying-buttress roof pillars, the Charger exudes menace even standing still, while its sculpted profile, recessed tail panel, and upturned rear deck embody the boldest design cues of late-1960s Americana. In a remarkable convergence of design and performance, the Charger emerged alongside one of America’s greatest engines, the NASCAR-bred 426-cubic-inch Hemi V-8—a pairing that forged an enduring icon in muscle car legend.
Constructed in Michigan at Dodge’s Hamtramck Assembly Plant—known locally as “Dodge Main”—on 18 October 1968, this early production Dodge Charger R/T Hemi left the factory as it appears today, finished in code F8 Dark Green Metallic with a black vinyl roof and transverse R/T stripe over black vinyl trim. Boasting a mighty 426-cubic-inch V-8, the car was further specified with numerous go-fast options, including a four-speed manual transmission, Super Trak Pak Dana 60 rear axle with 4.10:1 Sure Grip differential, power front disc brakes, and high-capacity, 26-inch radiator. The factory four-speed makes it one of 207 Dodge Charger R/T Hemis equipped as such for 1969, this according to the National Hemi Owner’s Association. Obviously intended to look as good as it drove, the car was also equipped with bucket seats and a center console, as well as a light package, drip-rail and beltline brightwork, variable wipers, and a Music Master AM radio.
Sporting the hallmarks of a complete restoration to factory specifications and with numbers-matching engine and transmission present, the car is accompanied by its original broadcast sheet, 1969 Dodge Charger owner’s manual, warranty booklet, and history report from Mopar guru Galen Govier.
A pillar of American muscle car lore, this Dodge Charger R/T Hemi, well-documented and restored to factory specifications, represents an exceptional opportunity to acquire one of the most iconic and enduring designs in automotive history.
