Piaggio developed the Vespa scooter to provide cheap, durable transportation in the lean years following the conclusion of World War II. For this project the firm, which had produced military aircraft during the conflict, made use of monocoque construction and incorporated streamlined design elements that—in typical Italian fashion—elevated the two-wheeled workhorse into something rather chic. The buzzy single-cylinder engine tucked beneath aerodynamic cowling is said to have inspired its name, which translates to “wasp.”

The Vespa’s basic formula was expanded and refined in the years that followed, and the 150 Super model was introduced for 1960. These were powered by a 145.5-cubic-centimeter two-stroke single-cylinder air-cooled engine mated to a four-speed gearbox; output was stated as a little over 5 horsepower, but this was plenty to move the scooter through urban streets, and even on adventures further afield.

Examples of the classic 150 Super, such as the scooter offered here, are eagerly sought by collectors of all ages today. This Vespa’s two-tone candy red and white paint job gives the scooter a period-correct, mild custom appearance, and the attractive sidecar gives it a character entirely its own—all while providing space for an extra passenger (and room for an extra spare tire).

The scooter has been upgraded with larger 10-inch wheels, as found on the contemporaneous Vespa 150 Sprint, and it has also been equipped with twin saddles, a glovebox behind the front cowl, and chrome guard bars on the front fender and rear cowling. Its engine, originally a 145.5-cubic-centimeter two-stroke Super unit, is said to have been increased to 177-cubic-centimeters during its restoration. The odometer displays fewer than 70 kilometers, reflecting the very limited road use it has seen since its restoration was completed.

Sporting the timeless looks for which the Vespa is known worldwide and desirably equipped with a sidecar in complementary colors, this 150 Super would be a delightfully fun addition to one’s garage.
