The models built on Aston Martin’s successful VH platform through the 2000s and 2010s offer a compelling counterargument to those who say that automotive design peaked in the 20th Century. Like the Mona Lisa, these cars were styled in adherence to the "Golden Ratio" to achieve perfect proportions. By extension, the second-generation Vanquish, which launched as the flagship grand tourer in the range, was equal parts aggressive and classically beautiful.
Famed Italian coachbuilder Zagato then collaborated with Aston Martin to create four exceptionally special, carbon fibre body designs for the Vanquish: a coupé, a convertible, the Speedster, and the Shooting Brake. Of the quartet, the latter is to many the most interesting and sought after. Aside from the elongated passenger compartment, revisions to the aesthetics included incorporating three-dimensional “Z” motifs in the front grille and rear mesh, while blade-like rear LED lights were inspired by the track-only Vulcan.
By using the upgraded Vanquish S model’s powertrain, the Zagato Shooting Brake also had plenty of brawn to complement its beauty. Under the restyled skin rests the marque’s acclaimed 5,925-cc, naturally aspirated V-12 engine that delivered 584 horsepower to the rear wheels via the third generation of Touchtronic, eight-speed, paddle-shift transmission.
Just 99 examples of the Shooting Brake were built, including the one offered here, number 13. Specified in the launch car’s shade of Lava Red, the exterior further benefits from intricate, two-tone wheels plus gold accenting on the grille and side strakes. The colour palette carries over to the interior, which compromises Pure Black and Spicy Red leather upholstery featuring graduated “Z” quilting on the seats and door cards. Meanwhile, the steering wheel centre, air vents, and switch gear on the “Waterfall” fascia also feature gold accents, and the boot compartment is presented in gloss carbon fibre.
Boasting single ownership from new, this car has spent the entirety of its life up to now as part of a collection in Seoul, South Korea. It heads to auction displaying 4,937 kilometres on its odometer at the time of cataloguing.
A showcase of modern coachbuilding, this exquisite Vanquish Shooting Brake is sure to appeal to enthusiasts of Aston Martin and Zagato.
