Representing Chrysler’s best effort to build a car with world-beating technology and performance packaged in cutting-edge style, the 300 “letter series” models have long held a special appeal that transcends Mopar circles.

This appeal is on full display in the Chrysler 300E of 1959. Its design is arresting, with towering tailfins that, even by late-fifties standards, push the envelope in terms of size, yet contribute to the glamorous, well-balanced whole. Performance, too, was boundary-pushing with the 300E employing a 380-horsepower, 413-cubic-inch Golden Lion wedge-head V-8 crowned by dual four-barrel carburetors. Those who have not yet sampled this model from behind the wheel will be pleasantly surprised—a 300E in proper tune is truly a fast machine and not merely by old-car standards.

Acquired by the consignor from its previous caretaker, who reportedly owned the car for almost four decades, this 300E wears a charming older restoration in its factory shade of Ivory White (code XXX) over a beige leather interior. Importantly confirmed to retain its correct-type Golden Lion V-8 engine—code MR413—the car came equipped from the factory with an extensive options list, including power windows, pushbutton preset radio, white convertible top, power antenna, driver’s side mirror with interior adjustment, day/night adjustable rearview mirror, and Solex glass.

Only 140 300E Convertibles were produced for 1959 and the $5,749 price tag indicated that Chrysler was content to keep this impressive letter car as a prestige offering for the Jet Set. According to figures compiled by the Chrysler 300 Club, only 27 are known to remain in existence, making them eagerly sought by discriminating collectors when they do become available.

As one of the most exceptional cars of its era, and with less than 30 examples believed in existence, this 300E Convertible is a fantastic opportunity to experience mid-century American opulence at its best.
