  • The Indian Motorcycle Company’s most iconic design
  • Handsome maroon over black livery
  • 74-cu.-in. air-cooled side-valve V-twin engine with three-speed, tank-shift gearbox
  • Coveted sidecar with matching skirted fender

The 1940 model year was significant in the history of Indian motorcycles, with the addition of skirted front and rear fenders on all its models, a feature that remains emblematic of the Indian line today. Mechanically, the Chief and Four models also received a new frame with an innovative dual plunger-type rear suspension as opposed to the decidedly low-tech un-sprung rear wheel with its large, low-pressure tire, as seen on Harley-Davidsons. Based upon a remarkably solid large-tube frame, the updated Indian models continued to build on the marque’s well-deserved reputation for smoothness and excellent handling.

Following the end of World War II hostilities, the Indian model line was limited solely to the V-twin Chief, as a way to meet pent-up demand for new motorcycles and conserve funds for the development of a new model line. In 1945, under a change of ownership led by Ralph Rogers, Indian was purchased from DuPont and began development on a new line of motorcycles patterned after the popular British singles. Unfortunately, these moves proved unable to save the historic company from closing its doors for good in 1953.

Offered from the Terence E. Adderley Collection, this 1947 Indian Chief is a superb example both for the quality of its restoration and for its ultra-desirable sidecar. Wearing a charming older restoration, the motorcycle and sidecar are cloaked in a period maroon color accented by sumptuous black leather trim, highlighted by the model’s distinctive, fringed saddle, chrome-plated driving lights, and an abundance of chrome trim. Since joining the collection in 2013, this Indian Chief has remained on static display, and it shows in excellent overall condition.

Whether to ride or exhibit, this is a Chief to cherish—a splendid model exemplifying the quintessential American V-twin motorcycle and one reflective of both the marque’s storied past and timeless appeal.
