Few individuals shaped Mercedes-Benz’s post-war success in America as decisively as Max Hoffman. The New York-based importer and dealer was instrumental in bringing the legendary 300 SL to the American market, and he soon recognized an opportunity for a smaller, more accessible automobile sharing its sophisticated styling. Mercedes-Benz was receptive, and the resulting 190 SL made its celebrated debut at the 1954 New York Auto Show.

Powered by a 1.9-liter inline four-cylinder engine equipped with twin Solex carburetors, the 190 SL produced just over 100 horsepower and could exceed 100 mph. Yet its appeal extended well beyond outright performance. With a comfortable, elegantly appointed cabin and generous luggage capacity, it was conceived as a refined grand tourer—an automobile equally at home on winding country roads or extended continental journeys. Its combination of style and usability proved remarkably successful, with production continuing for nine years.

The example offered here was delivered new to San Francisco, California, on 27 October 1959, according to a copy of its original build sheet on file. It left the factory finished in Schwartz 40 (black) over red leather (1079) upholstery, with a black soft-top. The build record also notes it as a special version for the American market, factory-equipped with five whitewall Dunlop RS “6.40 x 13” tires, an outside rearview mirror for the left side (supplied unattached), bumper overriders, and standard wheel trim rings (supplied unattached).

Being a desirable mid-production car, it benefits from several important improvements introduced during the model’s lifespan, including a revised subframe, chrome accents along the door tops, and larger rear taillights borrowed from Mercedes-Benz saloons. In the late 2000s, the 190 SL underwent a high-quality restoration, emerging in the quintessential Mercedes-Benz color of Silver Grey Metallic (DB 180G), complemented by a red leather interior and black fabric soft-top. The cabin is elegantly appointed with classic VDO instrumentation, an AM/FM radio, and an ivory-colored steering wheel and gearshift knob.

The factory build record confirms the chassis and body are numbers-matching and the engine to be a correct-type replacement unit, sharing the same number prefix as the original. Showing just 1,667 miles since its restoration at the time of cataloguing, the car clearly reflects the exceptional level of care devoted to every detail. The engine compartment and undercarriage have been finished to the same exacting standard as the exterior and interior, while its limited use since restoration has allowed it to remain remarkably fresh.
