Rightly regarded as the most desirable variant of Ferrari’s seminal V-8 berlinetta, the early fibreglass-bodied 308 GTBs offer a compelling blend of innovation, performance, rarity, and enduring style. Introduced in 1975 as the successor to the Dino 246, the 308 represented a turning point in Ferrari’s evolution, pairing Leonardo Fioravanti's striking Pininfarina design with a potent, transverse-mounted quad-cam V-8 engine to create one of the most engaging sports cars of its time.
The earliest 308s were constructed using lightweight fibreglass bodywork—Vetroresina in Italian—before Ferrari transitioned to conventional steel construction in 1977. This innovative composite coachwork reduced weight dramatically, resulting in a curb weight of approximately 1,050 kilograms, nearly 150 kilograms lighter than its steel-bodied successors. The weight savings enhanced every aspect of the driving experience, from acceleration and agility to steering response and overall balance, qualities that continue to distinguish the earliest examples as the purest expressions of the 308. With production believed to total as few as 712 examples, these fibreglass-bodied cars rank among the rarest roadgoing Ferraris of the period.
The configuration of this example, chassis number 20533, is rarer still. It is believed that only 154 ‘Vetroresina’ cars were delivered to the United Kingdom in right-hand drive. Since the transversely mounted, dry-sump, 2,926-cc engine breathed through the right-hand intake, the driver could lower their window to hear the induction bark in its purest form, directly over their shoulder, as they worked through the five-speed manual transmission with gated shifter.
Finished in Rosso Chiaro over a Nero leather interior, the Ferrari is additionally equipped with power windows, a Radiomobile cassette stereo, and air conditioning. Supplied new to the United Kingdom, the 308 GTB’s first owner was one Mr Brand of Wallington, Surrey. The car passed to its second owner in July 1979 and they retained the Ferrari until January 2017, thus accounting for most of the vehicle’s life. The car is well documented by a collection of invoices detailing the service history in the UK between 1977 and 2023. The Ferrari is further accompanied by a selection of older MoT certicates, the newest of which documents an odometer reading of 12,263 miles in December 1984.
This 308 GTB presents in wonderful condition today and is further accompanied by a tool kit, MoT certificates, and sale documents.
