While all 911s are brilliant, the best are forged in the crucible of motorsport. Built to homologate the 3.8-liter RSR for competition in BPR GT3 and GT4 racing, the Porsche 911 Carrera RS 3.8 is essentially a racing car built for road use.

Only 1,104 were made from 1994 through 1996, of which 227 were stripped-down Clubsport versions. An unknown number were standard RS versions that incorporated some of the desirable lightweight Clubsport options, such as the unique RS number 261 offered here.

Powering this exclusive homologation special is the 3.8-liter normally aspirated type M64/20 engine producing 296 horsepower at 6,500 rpm and 262 pound-feet of torque at 5,400 rpm. Its Variocam variable-length intake system and newly designed forged pistons introduced additional weight savings over the standard 3.8-liter engine. This distinctive engine sports dual oil coolers, lightened rocker arms, and a host of additional performance upgrades befitting its role as a homologation special. The gearing of its type G50/31 six-speed manual transaxle is optimized for acceleration rather than top speed. Porsche also fitted a limited-slip differential, 993 Turbo-sourced anti-lock brakes, and special 18-inch “Speedline for Porsche” three-piece light-alloy wheels with magnesium centers.

This one-off Carrera RS is a uniquely specified example of the model presented in the extremely attractive shade of Riviera Blue over black leatherette upholstery trimmed with Grey leather accents. RS number 261 was delivered new to Porsche Center Dusseldorf on 27 June 1995 replete with a desirable suite of options that included power steering, manual windows, motorsports steering wheel in leather, air conditioning, the German equipment group, radio, a stronger battery, and a locking differential. Noteworthy options borrowed from the exclusive RS Clubsport variant include the full Clubsport aero kit, Clubsport front strut tie bar, and a pair of special-order, heated and power-adjustable Clubsport fiberglass seats. An accompanying build sheet details additional Porsche Exclusive tailoring unique to this RS, with the door pulls, seat shells, and seat belts having all been rendered in matching Riviera Blue.

This unique RS 3.8 remained registered to a Dusseldorf-based company until 2007 and subsequently passed through significant Porsche collections in England, Holland, and France before it was imported into the United States under an NHTSA “Show or Display” exemption. The original owner had the car fitted with a full Heigo roll cage in Riviera Blue, Recaro Clubsport RS fixed bucket seats, and a Roock sports exhaust system. These modifications were removed in January 2008 upon the car’s arrival in England.

Inspection reports and service records dating back to the car’s earliest days clearly indicate a cherished life of infrequent use with fastidious maintenance.

Offered today from the LAPIS Collection of noted Porsche connoisseur Todd Blue, this uniquely specified, and nicely preserved Riviera Blue Carrera RS showed fewer than 8,725 miles (~4,041 kilometers) on its odometer at cataloguing time.

Examples of the Carrera RS 3.8 are scarce and do not come to market often. It is even rarer to find one in stellar condition with such a well-documented history and unique specifications. Sure to be an instant centerpiece of any collection it joins, this one-of-a-kind Riviera Blue homologation special offers its next owner nearly limitless opportunities for exhibition, participation in worldwide rallies and tours, or simple, exhilarating enjoyment on the open road.
