US Title
  • Highly sought-after “pre-A” Speedster from the model’s first production run
  • The 121st of 200 built for 1954
  • Numbers-matching engine and gearbox
  • Accompanied by a copy of its original kardex
  • Eligible for the Mille Miglia and numerous other prestigious rallies

Like many of the most successful post-war European sports cars, the Porsche 356 Speedster had its origins in the vision of powerful North American importer Max Hoffman. A superb judge of his clientele, Hoffman encouraged Porsche to build a lower-cost open model of the 356, stripped of virtually all amenities, with an emphasis on performance. The 356 Speedster, with its minimal fabric top, low windshield, and spartan cabin, proved an immense hit, as well as highly successful on the track.

The “pre-A” example offered here is from the first batch of production Speedsters, number 121 of 200 produced for 1954. A copy of its original kardex indicates it completed production on 1 December 1954 and was dispatched to “Fa. Hoffman, New York.” Significantly, both the engine and gearbox numbers listed on the kardex—33817 and 4677 H5, respectively—match stampings found on each component. A “speedometer in miles” is the only piece of additional equipment noted.

The Speedster was originally finished in Pure White with a black synthetic leather interior but has since been refinished in black over red with a black canvas top. The interior workmanship for the upholstery and carpeting appears to be of a high standard, retaining such authentic features as a wood-rimmed steering wheel and VDO gauges. The exterior is enhanced with Marchal driving lights and headlight protectors.

This numbers-matching Speedster would be an excellent choice for Porsche enthusiasts seeking a “pre-A” example to drive on the Mille Miglia or any number of other prestigious rallies or, alternatively, to fully restore.
