Celebrating Ferrari’s storied relationship with Pininfarina and the design house’s 80th anniversary, the Ferrari SA Aperta was introduced at the 2010 Paris Salon by then-president Luca di Montezemolo. SA referred to Sergio and Andrea Pininfarina (respectively, the son and grandson of company founder Batista “Pinin” Farina). Aperta, meanwhile, was a self-explanatory nod to the reconfigured body—the word meaning “open” in Italian.
Based on the 599 GTB Fiorano (Tipo F141), the two-seater roadster featured the uprated 5,999 cc 65-degree V-12 and six-speed F1 Superfast gearbox from the limited-edition 599 GTO. With no less than 661 horsepower on tap at 8,250 rpm and 457 lb-ft of torque at 6,500 rpm, performance was truly scintillating. The sprint from 0-62 mph was dispatched in an astonishing 3.6 seconds, while the top speed was no less than 202 mph.
However, this was far more than a topless 599 GTB. Ride height on the SA Aperta sat 100 mm lower than standard, and the car was fitted with a thicker rear anti-roll bar and recalibrated active dampers. There were also unique five-spoke, 20-inch wheels shod with 245/35 ZR20 tires at the front, and immense 305/35 ZR20 rubber at the rear, plus carbon-ceramic brakes for ultimate stopping power. The overall set-up remained softer than the GTO, however—Ferrari recognizing that the SA Aperta would be less likely to spend time chasing lap times than its stablemate the Omologato.
Aesthetically, the SA Aperta boasted a more steeply raked windscreen than the 599, and the GTB’s signature flying buttresses were abandoned in favor of aerodynamic fins integrated into the twin roll hoops. Both the fins and windscreen pillars were usually finished in metallic silver to provide a visual contrast with the rest of the body. At the front, larger cooling ducts in a redesigned bumper further differentiated the SA Aperta from its closed cousin, while the rear bumper and carbon fiber sills were also subtly reimagined. Beneath the skin, Maranello engineers had invested a considerable amount of effort ensuring that the open body remained suitably stiff. Remarkably, the weight penalty compared to the GTB was only around 17 kilograms.
In total, Ferrari built only eighty SA Apertas, one for each year since Pininfarina came into existence. Of those cars, it is believed that approximately one-third of production was destined for the United States. Furthermore, it is believed that this is the only US-specification example finished in Grigio Silverstone. Considering the above, this may be the only SA Aperta produced globally in Grigio Silverstone with a Cioccolato interior.
According to the accompanying window sticker, this SA Aperta was allocated to Ferrari of Quebec although the car was built for the US market and delivered new to California. Further to its exceptionally attractive and rare color scheme, the car was outfitted with a number of options including Alcantara carpeting, leather upholstery for the seat backrests, Ciccolato leather for the upper dashboard and steering wheel, heat insulated windscreen, iPod connection, as well as front and rear parking sensors. Emphasizing the SA Aperta’s grand touring credentials, it was also optioned with Schedoni fitted luggage as well as a suit carrier.
Having spent the vast majority of its life in California, the car migrated to Florida when purchased by the current and second owner, where it remains located today, showing just under 3,350 miles from new. Importantly, it remains accompanied by its fitted luggage and suit carrier, in addition to its owners manual and the aforementioned window sticker. It is accompanied by its original window sticker, owners manuals, hard top with buttresses, car cover, and the aforementioned fitted luggage.
Presented in a sensational color scheme that reflects the SA Aperta’s sophisticated nature, this example needs nothing except for an enthusiastic new owner.
