The recipe for the G 650 Landaulet was fantastically extraordinary. Mercedes-Benz took its enduringly popular, boxy Geländewagen with a convertible rear compartment, stretched the wheelbase by over half a metre, then had performance division AMG install a colossal 6.0-litre, biturbo V-12 borrowed from its flagship S 65 super saloon. That unit, which exhales through a side-exit exhaust system, was mated to a seven-speed automatic gearbox capable of handling all 621 horsepower. The platform was then raised on portal axles from the G 500 4x4² and given three locking differentials before being handed over to ultra-luxury-centric Maybach to have reclining, memory, massaging rear seats fitted from an S 600 limousine.
A mere 99 examples of the G 650 Landaulet were built, with this car ordered new to Belgium and completed in September 2017. The enormous and imposing bodywork was specified in Designo Mystic White, complemented by a Beige fabric roof to match the Beige Exclusive leather interior. The exterior further benefits from the selection of the Chrome Package, red brake callipers sitting behind the 22-inch immersion-polished alloy wheels, carbon fibre-style trim for the outer strips and wheel arches, a sidestep, and smoked rear glass.
Climbing aboard this G 650 Landaulet reveals an equally thoughtfully considered interior. The Beige Exclusive leather sits alongside Black Nappa hide and AMG Carbon trim pieces. This car was appointed with the Designo headliner finished in microfibre Dinamica Black, velour floor mats, the comfort seat package with heated front chairs, and a Black Nappa instrument panel surround. Should the soundtrack from the immense powertrain need to be drowned out, the Mercedes-Maybach was equipped with a Harman Kardon Logic 7 audio system, with smartphone integration enabled through Apple CarPlay and Google connectivity.
The utilitarian design makes the G-Wagen instantly recognisable in any form. With an imposing raised ride height, powered by a burbling V-12 engine, and presented in Landaulet form, this handsome Designo Mystic White and Beige example—which is accompanied by its G-Class and Maybach-specific owner’s guides and has covered a mere 200 kilometres at the time of cataloguing—is sure to stand out from the crowd.
