Ferrari’s stylish and luxurious 400 series of “2+2” grand tourers seemed like the ideal candidate for the Maranello works to transform into a high-performance convertible. While there might have been demand from buyers, Ferrari showed no interest in offering an official open-top version. Undeterred by Maranello’s unwillingness, some buyers opened their checkbooks even further and turned to independent coachbuilders to realize their dreams. The best and most desirable of these conversions came from the workshop of Richard Straman Coachworks of Costa Mesa, California. Straman designed and engineered a wide range of open-topped conversions for a multitude of makes, and his efforts often inspired the automakers themselves. While his work graced everything from Nissans to Mercedes-Benz, he is best known for his work with Ferrari.

Shortly after arriving in the United States, this 1985 400i Automatic headed to Straman for its conversion. At that time, the owner elected to have the car repainted in its current black. Typical of Straman's work, the craftsmanship meets or exceeds factory standards of the time, with excellent fit and finish all around. The precisely engineered top mechanism works smoothly and effectively and integrates neatly into the original Pininfarina design.

After spending time on the East Coast, this 400i came into the care of an enthusiastic collector who maintained it in top condition. During his nearly decades-long tenure, he enjoyed the car regularly on the road with his family and spared little expense in its care and maintenance. Highlights of the history file include new fuel injectors and seals, overhauled fuel distributors, and more. It sits properly on the road thanks to factory correct Koni suspension and alloy wheels with period-correct, high-performance Michelin TRX radial tires. Other period-style touches include amber Cibie fog lights, Vitaloni mirrors, and Scuderia shields on the front fenders. As offered, it displays an honest and inviting character earned through regular enjoyment.

The Ferraris that passed through Straman's workshop have developed a cult following as enthusiasts have come to appreciate their fine craftsmanship, quality, and style. This 400i is an excellent example of this rare breed.
