Few cars have shaped a period of time as strongly as the Ferrari Testarossa. Launched in 1984 at the Paris Auto Show and produced until 1991, it became the cultural automotive icon of the 1980s, epitomised by its role in Miami Vice and ubiquitous presence at every arcade as the car of choice for Sega’s now infamous driving video game, Out Run.

In real world terms, it was Ferrari’s successor to the 512 Berlinetta Boxer and its answer to the equally iconic Lamborghini Countach. Its Fioravanti-penned Pininfarina design not only incorporated the angular lines and intake strakes that were synonymous with Ferrari design until 1996, but also armed the car with a significantly lower drag coefficient than its aforementioned arch rival. Powered by an evolution of the 512 Berlinetta Boxer’s 4.9-litre, flat-12 engine, it was capable of 0-60 mph in 5.8 seconds and boasted a top speed approaching 180mph, for those brave enough to take it there. Conspicuously, the name Testarossa—or “Red Head”, translated from Italian—is a nod to the most significant upgrade to the 512’s engine that Ferrari used for the Testarossa, which came in the form of four-valve heads nestling under rosso cam covers.

Delivered new to its first keeper via Charles Pozzi of Paris in February 1991, this particular car would have been one of the last examples to leave Maranello before production switched to the all-new 512 TR later in the same year. It was acquired by its current owner in July 1995, via International Motors of Lyon, when it had covered 11,194 km and it has provided endless thrills in the ensuring 27 years of his ownership. As one would hope with an example limited to its low amount of owners, it is accompanied by a detailed history file that documents a lifetime of diligent up-keep. What is particularly noteworthy, however, is that the servicing and maintenance has been carried out almost universally by one single specialist; Garage Calderoni of Miribel, Lyon, with a most recent service less than 1,000 km ago and including all fluids, as well as front brake lines and a rebuilding of the front callipers.

The car presents in beautiful condition, with its Rosso Corsa paintwork retaining a deep shine and its Nero leather interior and rosso carpets showing minimal wear. As well as the detailed service history, the car is accompanied by a Ferrari-supplied emergency 12-volt light, leather owner’s pouch including original documents, original Pioneer cassette radio set, Schedoni luggage set with dust covers, two original keys, and two tool kit bags.

Any Testarossa in this condition, and with such continuity of its history and ownership, is rare indeed and this example is worthy of consideration for even the most fastidious of collectors.
