The original Mustang Boss 302 was built to contend against the Z28 Camaro in the Sports Car Club of America’s Trans-Am series. The “big block” Boss 429 arrived in mid-1969 as a way to homologate the “semi-hemi” 429-cubic-inch V-8 engine for both NASCAR and NHRA drag racing. A minimum of 500 examples needed to be produced for public consumption in order to run the engine in series racing. Even though the 429 was a better fit underhood in the Ford Torino, the Mustang was chosen.

The big-block was shoehorned into the engine bay of the Mustang with much modification by Kar Kraft of Brighton, Michigan. The alterations were necessary to clear the massive headers of the engine, which was quoted at 375 horsepower—farcical indeed, as in all likelihood, it was actually closer to 500 horsepower. No flashy striping and crazy caricatures were present, other than the callouts on the front fenders: The Boss 429 was all business. Just 859 were made in 1969, and another 499 in 1970.

According to the accompanying Elite Marti Report, this Boss 429 was built on 1 December 1969 and delivered to Minar Ford, Inc. of Minneapolis, Minnesota. Finished in Grabber Green—one of 52 examples of the model produced in this color for 1970—over a black knit vinyl interior, this Boss 429 was well-equipped, including power steering and power front disc brakes, console, tachometer, trip odometer, and AM radio. Most importantly, boxes were checked to include the highly desirable Drag Pack and competition suspension options.

The original dealer invoice, as well as the carburetor tag, NASCAR production number decals, and owner's manuals, are included with the car, further confirming that this Boss 429 is the real deal. It was restored under previous ownership by Ryan Horchen of H&H Performance, Inc. of Dubois, Pennsylvania. Prior owners include well-known Mustang aficionado Jackie Jones and Costa Rican race car driver Javier Quiros.

Fastidiously maintained in superb condition and stored in a climate-controlled environment, it is sure to make a statement in the collection of its fortunate next owner.
